Troubleshooting

The Tapworks water softener is very reliable.  If you experience any problems the following information is some of the most common questions which may help to check your softener and installation and save unnecessary expense.

  • PROBLEM: HARD WATER

Have you tested the water?

Test your water with the test kit that came with the water softener.  Test from a tap that should be running soft water, eg bathroom tap.  If the water is soft the reagent will be a blue colour within 1 or 2 drops.  If there is hardness in the water the reagent will react and remain a pink colour after 2 drops.

Have you got stored water?

It may take 1 or 2 weeks to have fully softened water.

Is your by-pass valve closed?

If you have an Easyfit all-in-one bypass kit, the top of the handle needs to feel smooth, for soft water. Check the video here.

If you have a 22mm installation kit, the by-pass (middle valve) needs to be closed, across the pipe. Check the video here.

Is the drain hose kinked?

The water softener will not be able to carry out it’s self cleaning process (regeneration) if the drain hose is kinked.  This will mean that within a week you may start to get hard water.

  • PROBLEM:  SALT LEVEL NOT GOING DOWN

Have you tested the water?

See above to test your water.  The water softener is very salt efficient.  Therefore you may be getting softened water even though the salt level is not going down.

Is the drain hose kinked?

The water softener will not be able to carry out it’s self cleaning process (regeneration) if the drain hose is kinked.

Are the valves in the correct position?

If the valves in are in the wrong position water won’t be going through the softener.

If you have an Easyfit all-in-one bypass kit, the top of the handle needs to feel smooth for soft water. Check the video here.

If you have a 22mm installation kit, the by-pass (middle valve) needs to be closed, across the pipe. Check the video here.

  • PROBLEM:  WATER LEAK

Is the leak coming from a joints on the pipework or hose connections?  If so, please contact your installer.

Drain

Check if the drain and overflow hoses are connected.  Check if the leak is not coming from the drain.  Check if the drain is not blocked.

Stop the leak

By-pass your water softener.  If you have an Easyfit all-in-one bypass kit, the top of the handle needs to feel rough. Check the video here

If you have a 22mm installation kit, the by-pass (middle valve) needs to be open, and the in-and outlet valves need to be closed, across the pipe. Check the video here.

If by stopping water going through the softener the leak continues then the problem is not coming from the softener.

  • PROBLEM:  HIGH WATER LEVEL IN SALT CABINET

Check the drain hose

Is the drain hose kinked or is the drain blocked stopping the regeneration water from draining.  Clear the blockage and manually regenerate the softener to clear the cabinet.

Check the over flow hose

Has the over flow hose been connected to the drain. The regeneration water will back flow into the cabinet.  If this is the case, the overflow hose has been incorrectly installed and you’ll need your installer to correct this.

Check the electrics

Has the water softener been turned off while carrying out its regeneration?  Turn on the water softener and manually regenerate the softener to clear the cabinet.

  • PROBLEM:  WATER SOFTENER IS NOT REGENERATING

The Tapworks softener is automatic and will decide when it wants to regenerate.  The default regeneration time is 2 am.  Generally the softener will regenerate once or twice a week.

Is the salt level going down?

If the salt level is going down then the water softener is regenerating.

Have you tested the water?

Test your water to check if it is hard or soft (as above).  If soft, the softener will be operating correctly.

Is the drain hose kinked?

The water softener will not be able to carry out it’s self cleaning process (regeneration) if the drain hose is kinked.

  • PROBLEM: BLANK DISPLAY

Check if the plug hasn’t been accidentally turned off. Is the socket working?
